Today's Photo! (Shinshoji Temple)

If you've got an extra-long layover at Narita Airport, consider taking a limited express train from the airport to Narita Station.  Shinshoji Temple, the main attraction of the town of Narita, gets a mere blurb in the guidebooks.  But Shinshoji holds high status as the second-most visited temple in Japan (or so said our tour guide).  It is especially popular to visit during the New Year.

Belonging to the Shingon sect of Buddhism, Shinshoji sprawls over Mt. Narita with its impressive buildings, stone lanterns, purification fountains, meticulous gardens, and even a stream-fed forest.  Wander through the trees for long enough, and you might even stumble upon a picturesque waterfall.  Bring the kids along on this sightseeing trip!  Pretty ponds filled with koi and turtles are sure to delight!

A imposing lantern graces the entrance to Shinshoji Temple.
